Urgency of Purpose

posted by admin

During my devotions this morning I was reading an entry called, “I bless you with the peace of Jesus” out of a little booklet titled, Daily Spirit Blessings by Arthur Burk and Sylvia Gunter. It made me think about the “tyranny of the urgent” vs “the urgency of purpose.”

No one walked this earth with an urgency of purpose like Jesus. He was pressed on every side by demands of the crowds yet He filled each day with those things that were priorities in the fulfillment of His ultimate purpose. John 5:19 says that Jesus told the Jewish leaders this: “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” Or to put it in laymen terms, “I get my direction for everything I do from my Father. I only follow His lead.” As He walked this earth, He accomplished more in the three years of His ministry than most people do in a lifetime and ultimately achieved His purpose in going to the cross. As I pondered this, I believe He was giving us a key to what it means to “walk in the Spirit” when He said He only did what He saw His Father doing.

So how do we accomplish that without being sucked in by the tyranny of the urgent that is around us and pressing in on us from all sides? For one thing, we need to develop that habit of constant communion with the Father, paying attention to the still small voice of guidance that He gives. In order to do that, we often have to quiet the clamor of our flesh and its desires that speak so loudly they try to drown out the Spirit’s voice. And we have to discern whether we are listening to God’s voice or satan’s voice – anyone who has repented of their sin and trusted in Christ’s sacrifice on their behalf, has become a child of God. Every child learns to know the sound of his father’s voice and it’s no different in the spiritual realm – but that’s a topic for a different blog entry. Suffice it to say that the key to knowing His voice is spending time with Him, reading His Word and talking to Him on a daily basis.

Another thing we need to do is pay attention to peace. I have learned that peace, or rather, the lack thereof, is like a warning light on the dashboard of your car. When peace is gone, so is God’s spirit. Jesus spoke these words in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you…” You can count on it; if peace isn’t ruling in your heart, He isn’t ruling either.

This line from the little devotional I read this morning stood out to me, “I bless you with being peaceful because you know ahead of time that your Father God will partner with you to provide adequacy for each day, whether a day with pain or pleasure.” Peace comes from walking in that assurance that He is there, just as He said He would be, no matter what your circumstances.

All of what I’ve already said presumes that we know what our purpose and calling is here on this earth. Without a sense of purpose that gives us the urgency to accomplish that purpose, we will inevitably be driven by the urgencies of life; the tyranny of the urgent. Obviously there are things that are legitimate urgencies in our lives such as getting meals on the table, getting the laundry done, earning a living, etc. However, God also has a destiny He would like each of us to fulfill and until that sense of destiny becomes more urgent than the common ordinary urgencies of life, we will have great difficulty accomplishing our calling.

So today I bless you with the knowledge of your calling and the ability to walk hand in hand with Him to accomplish it.

There is a story many years ago of an elementary teacher. Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didnt play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mr. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold Xs and then putting a big “F” at the top of his papers. ………
…………….
…………….
The story doesnt end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said hed met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit in the place at the wedding that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.
Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. And she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompsons ear, “Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She then said, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didnt know how to teach until I met you.”

There is a very beautiful saying, “A bad teacher complains; a good teacher explains; the best teacher inspires.”
Please remember that wherever you go, and whatever you do, you will have the opportunity to touch and/or change a person’s outlook. Please try to do it in a positive way.

Kevin Saunders Story Tragedy toTriumph!

posted by admin

Excruciating pain swept through me. It was the last thing — the only thing — that I remember from the moments before I lost consciousness. When I woke-up, I was face down in a hospital bed with massive internal and external injuries. My doctors told me there had been an explosion, and while I was injured, ten of my co-workers were dead. I wondered if they had been the lucky ones. The blast had hurled me right through the roof. I flew up over 300 feet in the sky, over a two-story building and then landed hard in a concrete parking lot. When the paramedics found me, my body was broken over at the chest like most people bend at the waist and blood and cerebral spinal fluid were oozing from my nose, ears and mouth. My first reaction upon regaining consciousness was an overwhelming fear. I was almost completely immobile with all kinds of tubes and needles poking out of me, and every other second, piercing pain shot through my spine. When the doctors told me that I was a paraplegic, I fell into a massive depression. I had always been a very athletic person, and now I couldn’t even get out of bed by myself. I was stripped of my pride and personal dignity, paralyzed from the chest down and left alone to wallow in self-pity. Depression and self-doubt ate me alive, dominating my thoughts and reducing me to a shell of a body. I realized that my life was over. It wasn’t only my arms and legs that had been rendered immobile, but my spirit had been lost in the blast as well. The reality of it ate at me with every ounce of sense in my body. I was done. Except that I wasn’t. Kevin went on to become a world champion athlete, to race and win medals in the Olympic Stadiums, and to star next to Tom Cruise in an Academy award-winning movie. Two presidents appointed me to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, and I worked alongside its chairman, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I became one of the top 100 speakers in America. I worked with the Kansas State University football team with Head Coach Bill Snyder to participate in what was later known as the ‘greatest turnaround in college football history’ Reverend Robert Schuller had me on his “Hour of Power” evangelism televisionshow, where I shared my testimony of faith to its estimated worldwide audience of 20 million around the world. I also pushed my wheelchair more than 2,000 miles across America, and later through five European countries serving as an international ambassador for health and fitness. The Kevin Saunders Story is the story of tragedy to triumph! “You have inspired me with your positive attitude and determination. You continue to raise the bar for everyone, to show people of all ages that you can turn dreams into reality. Thank you for teaching the rest of us what it means to be a real winner in life.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger “The Kevin Saunders story is an incredible account of how Kevin responded to an almost overwhelming situation changing himself and his life in the process. He had become through the sheer force of his will the world’s greatest wheelchair athlete and an eloquent spokesperson for anyone wanting to overcome adversity in their life and be a success. I hope you will find his story inspiring and uplifting.” — President George Bush The Kevin Saunders Story is one of almost epic proportions in where Kevin overcame one of the worst industrial accidents of its kind in Texas history. For anyone who needs action, adventure and inspiration in all in one then you need to watch “The Kevin Saunders Story” Kevin worked with me for 2 terms of my Presidency on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports His passion and enthusiasm were invaluable ets to the Council and I greatly appreciate his dedication and efforts in helping people realize the great importance of fitness and overcoming adversity and obstacles to live a balanced successful life — President Bill Clinton
