The Story of What a Friend We Have in Jesus

This is the story behind one of my all-time favorite hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” by Joseph Scriven. Knowing this story makes it even more precious to me. The faithfulness of this precious saint inspires me like no other! Joseph Scriven never intended for a poem he wrote to his ailing mother to be published. But in 1868, it is set to music and becomes one of the world’s greatest hymns, and the legacy of a man beset by tragedy, but who dedicated his life to helping the sick and poor.
